Sanyo High Definition Camcorder Xacti VPC-HD1

06-Feb-08

The Sanyo VPC-HD1 Xacti Digital Media Camera with 10x Optical Zoom is a high-definition compact digital media device that combines the functionality of a digital camera and a digital camcorder. Different than a standard digital camera that shoots short video clips, the VPC-HD1 offers advanced, next-generation video performance and high-quality stills in one small, lightweight camera. This powerful little device is designed to record both 720-pixel high-definition video and snap 5.1-megapixel digital still images, all of which are handily stored to a standard SD flash memory card. The high-precision LSI (large-scale integration) for image processing is the real “muscle” behind the Xacti HD1’s ability to record high-definition video. This powerful “high-definition engine” processes a massive number of calculations in a short period of time and enables the HD1’s high-definition 720-pixel processing, real-time MPEG-4 compression, and noise reduction.

The HD1 features a top-of-the-line screen with an incredibly clear 2.2-inch, Sanyo-developed Organic Light-Emitting Diode (OLED) display with 210,000 total pixels. The display flips out from the camera and rotates up to 285 degrees on an axis that allows you to take great video or still images from otherwise-difficult-to-view positions. The OLED display technology features an expanded viewing angle and up to 5,000 times faster response speed when compared with conventional display technologies. What this means to the user is a smooth playback of even the most rapid movements. And when not in use, the screen tucks securely back into the side of the camera for a pocket-sized portability and convenience.

Panasonic High Definition Camcorder HDC-SD9 AVCHD

06-Feb-08

The Panasonic HDC-SD9 offers full high-definition, 1920 x 1080 progressive recording, and uses the AVCHD video format. In addition, it features Panasonic’s original 3CCD system, Advanced MEGA O.I.S. (Optical Image Stabilizer), and a Leica Dicomar lens — three components that also contribute to the high-quality video output. Advanced MEGA O.I.S. checks and compensates for hand-shake around 4,000 times per second, about eight times more effectively than Panasonic’s previous systems. In the 3CCD camera system, the light received through the lens is split into its three primary color components — red, green and blue — and a signal from each is processed by one of the three CCDs to provide rich and detailed video images.

The SD9 is one of the world’s first camcorders to feature Face Detection for use in recording moving images. Face Detection automatically locates any faces in the picture and adjusts the exposure, contrast and skin tone to achieve optimal results. Thus, even when the faces are backlit or the lighting is low, faces are clear and not lost in the shadows.

HDC-SD1 Highlights

Superior color, detail, and gradation

Most professional broadcasting cameras use the 3CCD system. In a 1CCD system, all of the incoming light information is processed by the same CCD. The more advanced 3CCD system uses three distinct CCDs for processing, so there is absolutely no light loss. You can see the results in beautifully rendered images with vivid color, fine detail, and rich gradation:

Beautiful color
Noise can greatly diminish picture quality. Panasonic’s 3CCD system reduces noise by about 30 percent compared with 1CCD systems, helping deliver stunningly beautiful images with clear, natural colors.

Panasonic High Definition Camcorder AG-HVX200

02-Feb-08

We just received an AG-HVX200 and I tell you, it’s got more menus than a powerhouse Chinese restaurant. It’s not for people who enjoy the pyro-friendly camera; there are menus with the depth of a 15-layer cake. The reason is because the camera can be configured into over 100 different ways of shooting.

The HVX200 gives the new user a challenge to sink or swim, because it thrusts you into deep water. If you’ve ever shot with the DVX100, you’ll adapt to the HVX quite well, from other reviews I’ve read. I’m a still shooter for a major city daily newspaper, and we’re moving towards high definition gear to shoot movie clips and pull frames for news print. With this in mind, the camera’s color retention are quality. But I wish the configs were a bit simpler. It will take time to learn a new format of news-gathering, but I see the potential with this gear.
